Los rios de la Mesopotamia desaguan directamente o por medio de cortos colectores en el sistema del Parana y en el rio Uruguay. El principal afluente del Parana superior es el rio Iguazu. Su rasgo mas notable son las cataratas que llevan su nombre. Estan situadas a unos 20 km de la desembocadura del Iguazu en el rio Parana y forman una extensa medialuna de 2,7 km en la que se encuentran muchos saltos, separados entre si por islotes cubiertos de palmeras. Este magnifico espectaculo se ve realzado por el marco de la exhuberante vegetacion y el arco iris casi constantemente suspendido sobre las nubes de pequeñisimas gotas que forman las aguas al precipitarse. despues de la caida, las aguas se sumengen en un cañadon profundo, la Garganta del Diablo, por el cual corren vertiginosamente varios kilometros.
